Research Focus
Since 1974, Dr. Wilkinson has been engaged in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and clinical trials in this area. He first participated in SWOG (pediatric division) trials and then joined the Pediatric Oncology Group in 1980 and finally the Children's Oncology Group in 2000. He has been the Principal Investigator (PI) for all the pediatric trials at the UH Cancer Center since Clinical and Translational Research started participating in the Minority-Based Community Clinical Oncology Program (MBCCOP). During this period, he has personally registered almost 400 patients on trials. He is a firm believer in clinical trials and their availability to pediatric oncology patients in Hawaii. The impact of trials in this area and on survival has been documented in the literature. The participation and survival of patients mirrors national data. The Kapiolani Medical Center team has developed a tertiary center (Kapiolani Children's Blood and Cancer Center) that continues to participate in clinical trials through the Children's Oncology group (COG). He is the PI and Chief of the division. In COG, he is a member of the voting body, minority affairs committee, cancer control committee and chair of the CCOP committee. He has extensive experience with Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and preparing trials for review. With the Cancer Center staff, they have been successful in passing every POG and COG audit. With the help of the Hawaii Pacific Health Research Institute, the UH Cancer Center staff and the Western Institutional Review Board, they have been able to open virtually all of the COG trials and aggressively enroll patients in the important studies.
