I Love the Skin I’m In Campaign

HONOLULU — Hey youth, listen up! Are you into making graphics or like to draw? Would you like to see your artwork on T-shirts sold in popular surf stores? Well now you’ve got the chance. Join the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and Xcel in the fight against skin cancer by creating a design that will be featured on one of Xcel’s sun- protective T-shirts. The shirt will be produced and sold in stores in Summer 2012. And if you are the winning designer, you’ll also walk away with an Apple iPad 2.

The purpose of the 2012 I Love the Skin I’m In campaign is to inform Hawaii’s youth about preventing skin cancer. Conducted with funding from Xcel to the UH Cancer Center, the campaign will feature the following:

  • The I Love the Skin I’m In T-shirt design contest.
  • A campaign kick-off concert featuring live entertainment, free skin cancer screenings, cancer education booths, and food trucks at Kapiolani Park on May 12.

A few contest details:

  • Contest opens on February 10, 2012 and closes on March 31, 2012.
  • Design must inform and motivate young adults to help prevent skin cancer.
  • Open to all Hawaii residents between the ages of 13 and 25.
  • The winning designer will receive an Apple iPad 2 and the design will be printed and produced on sun-protective shirts sold in Xcel stores in Summer 2012.
  • Winner will be announced at the I Love the Skin I’m In skin cancer awareness campaign kick-off at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand on Saturday, May 12, during May, Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

With approximately 5,000 new skin cancer cases diagnosed every year, Hawaii’s youth are among those at greatest risk. This campaign highlights key prevention methods in reducing exposure to UV radiation by utilizing sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, sun-protective clothing, and seeking shade.
