Cancer Prevention & Control

Cancer prevention and control is essential to reducing cancer risk, incidence, morbidity and mortality. Much of cancer mortality in the United States can be prevented by reducing tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor dietary behaviors, physical inactivity, obesity, over-exposure and unprotected exposure to sunlight and artificial light, and exposure to viruses through blood and sexual activity. Furthermore, early screening and detection, enhancing quality of life, and prolonging life among cancer survivors are also critical to reducing the burden of cancer among populations.
The vision of the University of Hawaii Cancer Center's Prevention and Control Program is to create a world that is cancer free and promote health and wellness for all.

Program Goals
Our Program seeks to reduce cancer health disparities by preventing and controlling cancer.  Our goals are to:

  1. Advance our understanding of behavioral, psychosocial, biological, social, and environmental factors associated with cancer risk, incidence, morbidity, mortality, and survivorship

  2. Test interventions that aim to reduce cancer risk, increase early detection, and improve survivorship.

  3. Increase knowledge on how to disseminate research that benefits multiethnic, multicultural, and underserved populations.

Behavioral and bio-behavioral research helps us learn more about how to reduce most cancer risk among healthy, at-risk populations, and cancer survivors.
