The Cancer Research Program offers research experience to University of Hawaii undergraduate students through mentored research project in an area of focus such as molecular carcinogenesis, new therapeutic approaches to cancer treatment, cancer disparities, quality of life in cancer survivors, or community-based interventions to promote cancer preventive lifestyles in Hawai’i’s multi-ethnic population. The program will have two components: An 8-10 week hands-on summer research experience and a continued mentorship during the school year.

Program Components

  1. Summer Internship Program: the summer internship will allow students an opportunity to develop a project with a mentor full time with minimal distractions.
    Duration: June 1 through July 24, 2020 (Tentative. May be modified to accommodate students who have conflicting schedules)
  2. Internship during the School Year. The expectation is that students will continue with their projects into the school year, which may require 8-10 hours of commitment per week. Students may receive credits for directed research/ capstone projects/ honor’s thesis.
    Duration: Fall 2020- Spring 2021

Eligibility Requirements

Application to the internship is open to students who are:

  1. Currently enrolled at the University of Hawaiʻi, at the time of application, as a sophomore or junior
  2. Academically outstanding (at least a 3.5 GPA)
  3. United States citizens or holder of permanent resident visa
  4. Able to commit to a full-time summer research experience (8 weeks at 40 hours per week) and continue into the school year (8-10 hours per week)

Priority will be given to eligible applicants who:

  1. Express a cancer-related research interest that matches an available mentor’s focus in population or laboratory-based research
  2. Relevant research experience and skills
  3. Successful completion of college-level courses or training in the areas of biological, chemical, molecular, genetic, public health, nutritional, behavioral, clinical, computational, mathematical, or statistical sciences
  4. Ethnic background that is considered under-represented in biomedical sciences
  5. First generation college or low socioeconomic status of the family


Participants receive hourly pay according to University of Hawaiʻi schedules for their full-time participation in the internship program.

  1. Undergraduates receive  an hourly wage of $12.15/hour.
  2. The program does not provide housing, transportation, or travel expenses.
