Philanthropist and major benefactor, Joanna Lau Sullivan, donated $3 million to the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center on June 24, 2011 to help furnish and maintain the research building. In recognition of the major gift, the conference center at the UH Cancer Center was named the Sullivan Conference Center (SCC).

Since the opening of the new facility in 2013, the SCC has hosted a number of events, which include community and education outreach meetings, seminars and conferences. The SCC hosted more than 1,400 events from 2013 to 2022 with more than 82,000 people who have attended the wide variety of events.

The Sullivan family has been committed to improving cancer research and treatment in Hawaiʻi for decades. The gift supports the UH Cancer Center's mission to ultimately cure cancer.
