Impact on Policy

Hawaiʻi Tumor Registry
For over 60 years, the HTR has provided data on cancer rates for Hawaiʻi’s multiethnic population and has been instrumental for all cancer-related policies and planning initiatives.

Tackling E-Cigarette/Vaping
The Center’s research was the driving force behind Hawaiʻi becoming the first state in 2016 to raise the legal age for e-cigarette usage to 21.

Multiethnic Cohort (MEC) Study
The MEC Study, since 1993, has provided detailed information on disparities and causes of cancer among the main ethnic and racial groups in Hawaiʻi and California, serving as a base for implementing cancer prevention programs unique to Hawaiʻi.

HPV Vaccine Mandate
Influenced by our research, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health mandated HPV vaccinations for all students entering the 7th grade.

Financial Assistance for Clinical Trials
Our advocacy led to a new State Medicaid policy ensuring that all routine care expenses for Medicaid patients participating in clinical trials are covered.

Nutritional Guidelines for Cancer Prevention
The Center’s groundbreaking research formed the foundation for the 2020 Federal Dietary Recommendations set by the Department of Health, Human Services, and USDA.
