Research Focus

Our research focuses on the trace element, selenium, and the function of selenoproteins in antioxidant defense mechanisms and maintaining redox balance. We use cell culture, mouse models and ‘omics methods to investigate effects of manipulating dietary selenium and targeted genetic alterations of selenium metabolism, resulting in metabolic syndrome and impaired neurological function. We are also investigating the mechanisms underlying sexual dimorphism in selenium requirements and utilization.
